United People’s Federal Credit Union is celebrating over 25 years of providing financial resources to employees of Lancaster Health Care Providers and their families.
We began in 1979, when employees of the former “Saint Joseph Hospital of Lancaster” were offered the opportunity to join together and charter a “credit union”. Interested employees elected from amongst themselves a Board of Directors. It was these directors that began the task of officially incorporating. The initial purpose was to provide savings accounts to members/owners and pooling these funds together to loan to fellow members. Income would be generated by charging interest on loans. Any expenses and dividends (interest on savings) would be paid with the income from loans.
Our charter was granted by the National Credit Union Administration on March 13, 1979. Over 300 employees joined together and each member bought a par value share (deposited $5.00) and paid a $1.00 membership fee.
Members continued to add to their savings and began borrowing money from their credit union. By 1983, employees from other healthcare providers had heard about us and they wanted to join. Directors elected to expand the charter to include employees of other health care providers and our name was changed to Lancaster County Healthcare Employees FCU to reflect this new offering.
We continued to grow. Through the years, directors elected to develop and offer other services. Members wanted their families in on this and directors elected to expand the charter once again. Directors had to change the name. We now encompass all members and future members as United People’s FCU.
United People’s FCU is now providing financial resources to over 2000 members and offers a full array of services.
