Credit Card Scam - 6-2011

A member of  White Rose Credit Union recently received a call with a number of 901-248-7080.  It was an automated message that stated that "Because of your good credit rating Equifax has recommended that you are eligible to receive a lower interest rate on your credit card.  To continue press 1."

After pressing 1, a gentleman came on the phone and the member asked him which credit card was this in reference to and he told her all of them.  The member then asked him how he got the information from her local credit union?  He promptly hung up on our member.

Please keep vigilant watch for scams, especially in the summer months.  Never give out any information unless you have initiated the call.

When in doubt, call our Card Department at 717-755-9773 ext 1118.

Credit Card Scams

We recently became aware of a new credit card scam and would like to pass the information on to our members.

The person calling will identify themselves as employees of Visa or Mastercard and they are from the Security and Fraud Department.  You will be informed that your card is being flagged due to an unusual purchase pattern and that the amount charged will be credited to you account before the next statement.  The caller will give you the account number and verify your address.

The reason this scam is working is that they are not asking for you to supply them with information (yet).  He or she will then say that they must confirm that you're in possession of your card.  Once you give an affirmative answer, they will ask you to give them the 3-digit security number (CVC) on the back of the card to verify that indeed you do have your card.

Do not give it to them; this is the information that they need to actually produce a fraudulent card.  Instead tell the caller that you will contact Visa to validate their call.

The only time you should give anyone the CVC code is when you have initiated the transacation to purchase an item either on the Internet of by phone.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please contact our Card Department at 717-755-9773 ext 1118.
